What is Pastured Poultry?
Share

Melissahof flocks have been certified as PASTURE-RAISED by the American Grassfed Association. This verifies that the poultry are grassfed on pasture - foraging and exhibiting natural behaviors.
The chicken coops are mobile, along with the net fences, which allows the poultry to be frequently rotated to fresh pasture. The breeder layers are on rotation from April 1 to November 15. During the Wyoming winter of deep snow and below freezing temperatures, the mobile coops are docked in winter quarters where electricity powers heated waterers and radiant heat nest box pads.
Why American Grassfed Certification?
American Grassfed certification is a mark of quality, ensuring that poultry care meets strict criteria. These criteria include:
Truly Pasture-Based Systems: AGA-certified farms ensure that animals are raised on pasture for their entire lives. This means no misleading claims about “access” to the outdoors. These systems prioritize animal welfare and environmental sustainability, supporting the natural behaviors of the animals while promoting healthier ecosystems.
Transparent Animal Welfare Standards: AGA’s standards are designed to ensure humane treatment at every stage of life. From ample pasture space to proper shelter and attentive care, AGA certification guarantees that animals are raised with respect and dignity.
No Antibiotics: With AGA-certified poultry, you can trust that animals are raised without antibiotics. This commitment to natural farming practices benefits both the animals and the people who enjoy the food.
Third-Party Verification: To maintain transparency, all certifications are verified by independent third-party inspectors.
Understanding the Process
Obtaining American Grassfed certification involves a comprehensive evaluation of farming practices:
-
Application and Documentation: Farmers submit detailed records of their livestock management practices.
-
On-Site Inspection: Third-party inspectors visit farms to ensure compliance with AGA standards.
-
Approval and Certification: Once all requirements are met, the farm is granted AGA certification, with regular audits to maintain the status.
